GMC Plant Celebrates Millionth Vehicle

Early in November, auto workers at the General Motors Lansing Delta Township Plant in Michigan celebrated as one very special Crystal Red Tintcoat crossover rolled off the production line. What was so special about this particular CUV? Well, the GMC Acadia Denali was the one-millionth vehicle produced at General Motors' youngest production plant.

That's right. The plant opened in May of 2006, and it employs 3,700 people working three shifts, producing just about 300,000 vehicles a year. The plant has produced four General Motors' SUVs in the LEED-certified building, including the GMC Acadia and the GMC Acadia Denali. And just five-and-a-half years after opening, they reached the one-million vehicle milestone.

Among the people celebrating were Plant Manager, Scott Whybrew and Union Chairmen Rick Martinez. Both applauded the hard working employees and the community they've built at the facility. Whybrew commented, "Our team has established a strong foundation by continually improving our plant operations in order to exceed the expectations of our customers."1 Martinez underlined the importance of working together as a team, and said, "Producing the millionth vehicle would not be possible without the great people we have here...our employees are highly trained, and we couldn't create the models with such high quality without our people."2

So what do you do after you produce a million vehicles? Well, in the words of Shift Leader Carol Bemis, "We'll build another million, and then we'll build another million after that. We'll just keep building great cars with our team of people."3

Duke Automotive looks forward to the celebration of the next million vehicles in Michigan. In the meantime, we invite you to come down and see us at 2016 N Main St, Suffolk, VA 23434. We're happy to show you all of the quality built into each new GMC by General Motors employees like the hard-working team in Lansing. And be sure to stayed tuned for more news and updates from GMC!
